Stencil It

Stencils are associated with graffiti, street art and spray paint–anything but classy. But stencils are easy and relatively inexpensive ways to leave your personal touch on any room, however small. Walls and doors are ideal spaces for stencilled borders, which can take the place of wallpaper. Stencilled fabric or wood can be framed as inexpensive pop art pieces. And there are no limits in terms of color and subject.

Stylish or trashy?

Start by choosing images that reflect your taste and fit the room. Then photocopy or convert the image into monochrome and trace onto on a sheet of material that is solid enough to resist paint but thin enough to be cut. Using a scissors or a blade, cut out the lighter areas. Remember to use non-toxic paint that will adhere to the surface you intend to stencil.
